Library patrons receive a replacement fee when:

  • An item that is checked out to their account is 20 days overdue.
  • They report to library staff that an item is lost, destroyed or damaged beyond repair.

The replacement fee is $90 for Whitman, Summit and Interlibrary Loan (ILL) items and $50 for Library Locker keys. If the item is returned in good condition, the $90 fee is completely refunded. There are no fines for the time the item is overdue.

Refunds may not be possible, if we have already paid to replace the item. In some cases, we may be able to reduce the fee to the cost of replacement, plus staff time.

A patron's account will be blocked if the maximum limit of replacement fees is reached.

Please direct questions about replacement costs and billing to the Access Services Manager (kirbyk@whitman.edu).
