There are a few ways you can get your textbooks. It is always good to make sure from your professor whether or not it is expected you are bringing readings (especially physical books) to class as that might affect how you access it. To find out what books you need, consult your classes syllabi and canvas page and check the bookstore's listings. For many of the library-related options (#3-5 below), it may be helpful to look at your syllabus and see when the book is in use, and if you will need it for final assignments, to time your requests accordingly.
- Whitman Bookstore in Reid (books are available used or for rent for cheaper options)
- There are many reputable websites that you can order used copies of books through. Note: some classes may require a digital component that cannot be purchased with a used copy. It is also important to make sure you are buying the right edition of the assigned textbook.
- Copies available in Penrose Library: Check the library catalog to see if we have a copy. Note, it is possible for other patrons to request the item and you will need to return it in 2 weeks (more info on Recalls).
- Course reserve: Faculty can request textbooks be put on reserve, which usually means they can only be checked out for 3 hours, and have to stay in the library (check out lengths and their ability to leave the library can vary). Because there is often only one copy, this is not a good option as a full-time replacement for textbooks, especially if you need to bring books to class.
- Summit & ILL
- Summit: Also via the library catalog, this service allows you to request books be sent from other libraries in Washington and Oregon. This can take 5 to 7 days for the book to arrive at the library, so is not an immediate option. Loan length is 12 weeks with a 6 week renewal.
- ILL (Interlibrary Loan): This allows you to request books from a larger group of libraries than Summit. If a Summit request is rejected by all the nearby schools, it automatically goes to ILL. This can take up to 2 weeks for a book to arrive. We will often communicate with you at this point to make sure you want us to pursue the request because of the longer wait time. Loan length is 6 weeks with varied renewals by the lending library, so this is not a good option for the whole semester.
